Our Year 3 students visited the Royal Botanical Gardens in the city during last week's Reconciliation Week 2023 where they developed a greater understanding and respect for the local Aboriginal culture of the Wurundjeri people who are the traditional custodians of the land on which Melbourne is built upon.
Our students learnt about some of the unique cultural practices of the Kulin Nations of Melbourne and examined the sustainable land practices used by Aboriginal people across Australia. They also:
- Discovered Indigenous plants, their uses and significance to First Peoples
- Learnt how Aboriginal people care for the plants and Country
- Examined tools and technologies designed and made by Aboriginal peoples
The above helped our students to better understand First Nations People and their connection to Country, their use of plants for food, tools, shelter and medicine and their deep connections to the land, water, the environment as well as our sense of belonging.
